Renowned for equal parts uplifting / tear inducing live shows, Bakers achingly raw lyrics intertwined with mesmerizing melodies and an emotive vocal tone that produces shades of Motown-era soul, it leaves no question as to why international media have touted this native New Zealand singer / songwriter as one to watch.
Bakers first single release, a classic blue-eyed soul original “Even In The Darkness” won him the most votes on The Audience, a website dedicated to new, unreleased music. The prize included a recording session at Neil Finn’s Roundhead studios and music video funding.
He then went on to attend the prestigious Red Bull Music Academy in New York, when he was chosen out of 4000 applicants to take one of only 60 places. Following the academy he spent the summer in London playing a series of shows and recording his EP with UK producer Andy Lovegrove (Breaks Co-Op, Super Grass).
Baker returned to Europe in August to play shows in Glasgow, Edinburgh, London and Budapest following a performance at one of Australia’s most respected music festivals, Splendour In The Grass, in July.
Next up is the release of a limited edition 7” record courtesy of the Red Bull Music Academy. The track “Just Want To Thank You” is a nod to those who have helped him on his musical journey, and introduces the addition of some sonic ingredients from the likes of J Dilla & Sly Stone, which give the listener a glimpse into how much more there is to come from Baker.
It has been an exciting year for Louis Baker who is in the running for the APRA Silver Scroll Award for his track 'Back on my feet'. Baker has been announced as one of the five finalists earlier this year, and the winner will be announced at the APRA Silver Scroll Awards on Thursday 30th October 2014 at Wellington's TSB Arena - so stay tuned.
While his voice blasts doors around the worldwide open, Louis Baker’s songwriting enchants. “I’ve got all this music within me. I call it expressive soul, because it’s simply the soul of a man and it’s expressive.”
“He has the rich vocal tones of John Mayer, the soul-filled lyrical and melodic ability of Jamie Lidell and a laid back, rasping style all of his own” - Hit The Floor, UK
“Bakers beautiful voice, (is) delicate and fragile, yet at the same time imbued with an emotional maturity” – The Next2Shine
